Fifth generation

Facing heavy competition from Microsoft, Netscape decided to make the web browser package (now called Communicator) free for everyone, and to release its source code to the open source community. This was on January 23, 1998. The Mozilla project was born.

Meanwhile, completely different modes of browsing appeared. In Japan, iMode phones became the main devices for information browsing, and in Europe WAP struggled to get the same position. Given the very limited bandwidth and screen sizes at that time, ordinary web browsers were not an alternative with mobile devices.
