What is CLI?

What is CLI?  Back to the Top
Caller Line Identification means that, when you make a telephone call, your phone number is given to the person you're calling. On BT and some other companies' lines, dialling 1471 when the call is finished tells you the CLI. You can also obtain devices which plug into your line and display the CLI details on a screen as the phone rings.

CLI is important to ISPs such as Abel Internet, as it allows us to identify those few individuals who misuse the Internet, in particular for the sending of mass unsolicited emails (often referred to as "spamming"), which is causing us serious problems. As it is possible to give false information when signing up, CLI is the only reliable way of tracing someone misusing the Abel Internet service

What if my CLI is withheld?  Back to the Top
In the interests of privacy, you may have instructed your telephone line provider to permanently remove the sending of CLI on your line. If this is the case, you will still be able to connect to Abel Internet, however access to some services will be limited. In particular, you will not be permitted to send any emails. Browsing the web and reading email is unaffected.

If your line is set to withhold CLI, you may be able to dial a prefix code which would override this, for example on a BT line, the prefix 1470 would force CLI to be presented. It may be the case that once CLI is withheld on the line, it can't be overridden, in which case you would have to enable CLI and then withhold it on a per call basis using a prefix code (Eg 141 for BT lines). You should contact your telephone company for more details.

The precise instructions for dialling the CLI prefix code vary, so please visit the Support Index and choose the operating system you have on your computer for the correct instructions.
