Why does it feel so wrong? Is it just me being a conservative?
The main thing that bothers me is that this is a lot of effort to fix a non-problem, that Rust has a single implementation with no standard, and that this project is licensed under MIT instead of GPL. So you're creating something with worse power relations than the existing solution without really improving it in any meaningful way.
