Nerd Cred

1 2021-09-01 20:01

Fucking disgusting. Why do I crave it?
I could just use python but I want to use C or Scheme, but then you have to do everything yourself and actually THINK.
But it would be so hardcore man. Radical.

legs man legs man
has no body just legs, man
legs man legs man
run around the world

knew a man was twenty five
sold his mule just to stay alive
bedbug banjo on his knee
legs man some the same as me

legs man legs man
has no body just legs, man
legs man legs man
run around the world

back in nineteen twenty one
surgery drunk just for fun
remove my body replace with legs
now im sure to shuck and beg!

legs man legs man
has no body just legs, man
legs man legs man
run around the world

legs man legs man
has no body just legs, man
legs man legs man
run around the world

I don't use C and scheme for the "nerd cred." I use them because the abstractions and standard library are small and easy to keep in my head so I can focus on hacking. Yeah sometimes you have to build some data structures yourself but if you've done it before it's not that big a deal and beats being interrupted by having to read documentation for someone else's API.

Spot on.

The only reason to learn esoteric languages such as Scheme and Haskell is to feel smart and look smart. Feeling and looking smart is important for those smug holier-than-thou programmers. However, if you want to do practical things rather than spending time to inflate your ego, it is much better to program using Python, C++, Java, and all the other mainstream languages. Use existing libraries, and stop reinventing the wheel. Be social, and stop using those one-person languages. Use mainstream languages that make teamwork and large-scale cooperation easy.

The "shut up and calculate" approach in physics is also applicable in programming. Instead of wasting time evangelizing your favorite esoteric language, simply shut up and start producing practical code in a mainstream language. Over time, you would have produced far more practical software than the programming language evangelists and idealists. Actions speak louder than words.

Which mainstream language would you suggest? :~)

It is so sad that generation after generation of Lisp enthusiasts inevitably fall for the curse of Lisp.

13 2021-10-06 21:38

better the curse of lisp then the curse of the mummy.

Frankenstein is hard as a rock when he moves right? But the mummy is lithe like a serpent or like a cat or even a mongoose or whatever the hell it is and you can't trust him because he's... it's just not... it's not that he's like, up to something, it's just that he looks like he's up to something something so much that it's like you know he's used to that, he's used to people thinking that he's some kind of shifty character when *he's not* but they've done it to him so much so now he actually is and that's why you don't want to be cursed with that s***. Mummyitis. It's like faking the mumps with cheeks bulging with specifically Brach's brand gummy worms, but instead you're a mummy that just looks out for himself so much these days that people just presume you ONLY look out for yourself at all.

No.

Why do people insist on using GoDaddy for domain registration? They're terrible!

To get "nerd cred", of course. It is a common faux pas committed wannabe nerds in their pathetic attempt to mimic the real nerds. Real nerds can easily see through the façade of impostor nerds, but the fake nerds do not know this.

16 2021-10-08 18:39

Fake nerd is better than real nerd because at least fake nerds have something worth faking.
