Professor Gillian Calder named Associate Dean, Academic and Student Relations

On July 1, Professor Gillian Calder became UVic Law’s new Associate Dean, Academic and Student Relations.  She succeeds Professor Heather Raven, who leaves that role after six years of dedicated service.  We are all very grateful to Professor Raven for her huge contributions. We know that Professor Calder will be a superb Associate Dean.

Professor Calder has been at UVic Law since July 2004.  She joined the faculty with an LLB from UBC, an LLM from Osgoode, a diploma in university teaching from UNB, and directly from the practice of Aboriginal law in Vancouver.  During her tenure at UVic Law she has taught a range of courses in the first and upper years, served as the Director of Legal Process, worked on numerous committees including Curricular Review and the proposed Indigenous Law program, and pursued an active research agenda.  In recent years her research has come to focus more on questions of critical pedagogy, with particular attention to the role of experiential education in the law school classroom.  She has been active on campus and through feminist NGOs and national legal organizations on some of the most pressing social questions in Canadian law and legal education today. She is also a single-parent and whenever possible, a rock-climber.  She is excited to bring the combination of these experiences to her term as Associate Dean, and to join the team in the front office.
