Students compete in International Client Consultation Competition

After a first in our national competition, UVic law represented Canada in the International Client Consultation Competition, (the “ICCC”,) held April 27 – 30 at the University of Windsor law school.  Team members were students Lan Nguyen and  Alex Ciconne, travelling with co-coach Steve Perks.

Supporting the team’s preparation were alternate/researcher Reina Mistry, and co-coaches  Andrew Pirie, and Nicole Smith.  The ICCC is affiliated with the International Bar Association, and brought together law students from nineteen countries for this event.  In this moot teams of two students interview and advise clients played by actors, demonstrating legal knowledge and skills in professional responsibility and ethics, interviewing, legal analysis, alternative dispute resolution, and legal problem-solving. 

This year the subject matter of the client’s problems were in the area of family law.  UVic scored highly in the preliminary rounds and advanced to the semi-final round, where we were edged out by an excellent team from Scotland.  Scotland in turn was edged out by an excellent team from New Zealand in the finals.  The event was well organized and hosted by the Canadian organizers, that included an alumni of ours who competed as a student in this event in years past, Brigeeta Richdale.
