UVic Law Student's Internship in East Timor
UVic Law student James Billingsly will be doing an internship with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in East Timor this summer. James will be assisting in the coordination of legal aid, legal awareness, and community-level dispute resolution mechanisms. "Last year I had the opportunity to travel to the island of Timor and speak with locals about the human rights violations there and the challenges that citizens of Timor-Leste face in a fragile post-conflict state. I am looking forward to working with the UNDP this summer to address some of these challenges, ensuring citizens have access to their legal system and enabling them to seek a just remedy for the wrongs they have suffered."
The internship is offered through Canadian Lawyers Abroad, a national not-for-profit with a mission to improve lives by supporting good governance, the rule of law, and human rights. The work that UNDP does in East Timor falls broadly into four main areas: poverty reduction; democratic governance; crisis prevention and recovery; and environmental and sustainable development.
