UVic Law Students to take on UBC Law Students in Slaughter Cup
UVic Law students will take on UBC Law students in the Slaughter Cup on Saturday, February 4, 2012, playing for bragging rights and rugby glory. The match starts at 2:30 p.m. at the Velox Rugby Club, 3957 Gordon Head Road. This traditional match between UVic and UBC began in the early-1970's.
The Victoria law firm Jones Emery Hargreaves Swan donated the Cup and named it after UVic Law alumni and rugby fanatic, the late Lieutenant Commander John Slaughter ('85). The Slaughter Cup was first contested in 1982 and won by UVic with help from former team member and current UVic Law Professor Chris Tollefson ('85).
After over a decade-long hiatus, the Slaughter Cup was revived last year, with over 200 current law students and alumni, many dressed in costume, coming out to support the underdog UVic team. It worked: UVic beat UBC by an impressive score of 17-5.
This year's event promises to be even more exciting with half-time entertainment and fan participation contests. In addition, prior to the men's match the first UVic Law women's rugby team will play their inaugural match against the UBC Law women.
All current Law students, faculty and alumni are encouraged to come and support the UVic Law teams as they go against UBC in what will be an action-packed afternoon of sport and tradition.
