Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the University of Victoria Foundation.

 

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Bryan and Audrey Williams Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to single parent students entering or continuing in the Faculty of Law.  Preference will be given to an Aboriginal student. Upon application, the bursary may be renewed up to three years.

Cariboo Bar Association Bursary*

One or more bursaries will be awarded annually to a student in the Faculty of Law who has demonstrated good academic standing and financial need.  Preference will be given to a student from the area of the Province of British Columbia served by the Cariboo Bar Association.

Constable Ian D. Jordan Bursary Fund*

An annual bursary or bursaries has been established to assist deserving students in the Faculty of Law.  The award is designed to aid students who have family responsibilities, and who need financial help to further their education, and who have an  interest in criminal law.  The bursary was established to honour the contributions to the Law School and to law enforcement of Ian Jordan, a 1984 UVic graduate, seriously injured in 1987 while on duty with the Victoria City Police.

One or more bursaries will be awarded to students entering or continuing in the Faculty of Law J.D. program who have demonstrated financial need. Preference may be given to recipients who have demonstrated a commitment to community, the arts and/or social justice through volunteer activities. Nominations will be made by the Faculty of Law.

Drs. Patricia A. and Roland W. Radcliffe Bursary in Law*

One or more two-year bursaries are awarded to students who are Canadian citizens entering second year in  the Faculty of Law.  Preference is given to those students who are active in either student or University governance or intramural athletics.

Faculty of Law Indigenous Emergency Assistance

Emergency bursaries are awarded to Canadian-born Indigenous students enrolled in full time or part time studies in the Faculty of Law in the event of an unforeseen emergency or circumstance. The funding is intended to assist with financial emergencies including, but not limited to:

  • medical, optical, or dental expenses
  • family crisis, community obligations, or cultural commitments and responsibilities
  • unanticipated expenses that are beyond the student's control and that directly impact their ability to complete the term.

Fraser Valley Bar Association Bursary

A bursary of $1,000 is awarded to a student in the JD program of the Faculty of Law.  Selection of a suitable student will remain at the discretion of the Faculty of Law.

Honourable Thomas A. Dohm, Q.C., LL.D., Academic Law Faculty Entrance Bursary*

A bursary will be awarded annually to an entering student who demonstrates financial need.  Preference will be given to a student with strong academic credentials who is disadvantaged racially or ethnically, physically disabled or from an economically deprived background.

Hugh Stephen Bursary in Law*

A bursary, established by Mr. Hugh Stephen, is awarded annually to a student in the Faculty of Law who needs financial assistance to complete his or her legal studies.  An applicant's contribution to the activities of the Faculty and academic record may be considered when applications for the bursary are evaluated.

Jean Marie Sherwin Bursary in Law*

A bursary is awarded to a student annually in the first or second year of the Law program who has demonstrated superior ability, enthusiasm and aptitude in the study of Law and is in need of financial assistance to continue his or her studies.

John A. Coates Q.C. Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Law.  Preference will be given to students who demonstrate an interest in property law, including the law of property transactions.

John Finlay Legacy Bursary*

John Wight Memorial Bursary*

A bursary is awarded annually by the Faculty of Law to a student who has completed the first year of the LL.B. program and who, in addition to a record of academic merit in the Faculty, is deemed to be a worthy recipient in need of financial assistance.

Justice Peter D. Seaton Memorial Bursary

A bursary of $750 is awarded to a student in second or third year in the Faculty of Law.  The student must have attended a secondary school or college from within the North Okanagan Regional District (Enderby, Armstrong, Lumby, Coldstream, Vernon).

L.E. Frances Druce Bursary in Law*

Law Alumni Association Bursary*

Bursaries are awarded to undergraduate JD students in the Faculty of Law.

Law Foundation Entrance Bursary*

A substantial capital sum has been donated by the Law Foundation of British Columbia in order to provide an annual amount of $29,000 to be distributed to needy students entering the Faculty of Law.  All applicants to the law school are automatically considered.  These awards are specifically directed to students who have suffered disadvantages based on racial, cultural, physical, family or economic factors and serve as an instrument to increase diversity in the law school population, and ultimately, in the profession of law.

Law Student Emergency Fund

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the Faculty of Law. The bursary is intended to offer students one-time financial assistance in the event of an unforeseen emergency or circumstance while attending the University of Victoria. International students are eligible for this emergency bursary.

Life Underwriters Association of Canada Educational Foundation Bursary in Law*

A bursary is awarded annually to a student in the Faculty of Law who demonstrates financial need.

Lyn Wayland Memorial Bursary*

An award will be made annually in memory of Lyn Wayland to honour her accomplishments, her contributions to the Faculty of Law, and her personal success as an aboriginal person in the face of many obstacles.  The award is made to a law student who has made a contribution to the community or to the Faculty of Law.  Preference will be given to an aboriginal student.  The nominee will be selected by representatives of the aboriginal law students in consultation with the Dean of the Faculty of Law.

Miller Thomson, LLP Financial Hardship Bursary

One or more bursaries, to a maximum of $1,000 each, are awarded to students in the Faculty of Law to provide one-time financial assistance to students who are experiencing an unforeseen financial hardship.  The recipients will be determined at the discretion of the Law Financial Aid Officer.

Mobina Sherali Jaffer Bursary*

Funds have been provided to endow an entrance bursary at the Faculty of Law, in an amount not less than $500.  The bursary shall be awarded to a student in financial need.  Preference shall be given to a student who herself or himself is a member of a visible minority and who has immigrated to Canada.

Nanaimo County Bar Association Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering or continuing in the Faculty of Law.  Preference will be given to students from the County of Nanaimo.

Nancy Johnson Memorial Bursary*

A bursary will be awarded annually to a student inthe Faculty of Law who has encouraged and supported fellow students and demonstrated academic achievement, determination and hard work, and who is in need of financial assistance.

Nicholas Thomas Mathers Memorial Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering the Faculty of Law JD program.  Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates an interest in pursuing a career as a Crown Prosecutor.

Norton Rose Fulbright Excellence Bursary

A bursary of $750, or such higher value as the donor may determine, will be awarded annually to a student in financial need with good academic standing in first year, entering second year in the LL.B. program.  The recipient will be determined by the Senate Committee on Awards, upon the recommendation of the Dean.

Paula MacNaughton Memorial Bursary*

One or more bursaries awarded to second or third year students who have an interest in business law and who participates in law school life.  Preference will be given to a student who has  a strong academic record.

Prosecution Service of British Columbia Bursary*

R. J. McMaster Bursary

One bursary of $600 is awarded to 1st, 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate student in the Faculty of Law.  Preference will be given to Aboriginal Canadian students.

Richards Buell Sutton Entrance Bursary

An entrance bursary of not less than $600 is awarded to a student in the Faculty of Law.  Preference will be given to a student who has graduated from a British Columbia Secondary School.

Ron and May Lou-Poy Academic Excellence Bursary*

UVic Law Students' Society Entrance Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering the Faculty of Law JD program who have demonstrated academic achievement and financial need.  Preference may be given to so recipients who have been previously involved in student government or leadership in an academic setting.  Selection of suitable recipients will remain at the discretion of the Faculty of Law.

Victoria Bar Association Bursary*

A bursary is awarded to an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Law.

Yvette Bass Memorial Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering or continuing in the Faculty of Law.  Preference is given to students who are enrolled in less than a full course load because of disabilities or chronic health concerns including mental health disabilities.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed below.

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to a student completing the second year of the J.D. program who has achieved high academic standing and who has demonstrated the qualities required for the practice of law.

Alfred Joseph Memorial Award*

One award is given to an Indigenous undergraduate student entering the Faculty of Law who has demonstrated academic ability together with determination, resilience, contribution, and compassion in areas of life such as prior work experience, graduate study, community service, family care, or disability. Preference will be given to a student in the JID program.

Allison Osler Entrance Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding Indigenous women entering the Faculty of Law.

Andrew Petter Award in Law

One award of $5,000 is given to an undergraduate student entering second year in the Faculty of Law JD/JID program and who has demonstrated community involvement and financial need. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Ann Roberts Humanitarian Award

An award is made to a Faculty of Law student who is in their second or subsequent year of studies. The award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding contribution of his or her time and effort in lending support and assistance to the well being of individuals within the Law School, of the Law School as a whole and or of people within the community at large.

Nomination forms are available from and must be submitted to the Law School by January 31. The award is made on recommendation of the Faculty of Law in consultation with the Law School´s Selection Committee.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Annie Cadby Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship, established by Louis F. Lindholm, is awarded to the student who attains the highest standing in the introductory course on Constitutional Law offered by the Faculty of Law.

Bennett Jones LLP Alumni Entrance Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to students entering the Faculty of Law J.D. program who have demonstrated academic excellence.

Betty and Gilbert Kennedy Scholarship in Law

One or more scholarships are awarded to an outstanding student beginning year two or three of the Law program in the Faculty of Law.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Bibi K. Khan Award

Up to two awards, of $1,000 each, are given to women undergraduate students continuing in the Faculty of Law who have demonstrated financial need and who are South Asian or have South Asian descent. Preference is for those of Pakistani and/or Afghan descent. Approval of the recipients is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

South Asia is the southern region of Asia, which is defined in both geographical and ethno-cultural terms. The region consists of the countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Blake, Cassels and Graydon Award in Corporate and Commercial Law

The law firm of Blake, Cassels and Graydon sponsors the Blake, Cassels and Graydon Award in Corporate and Commercial Law. The award, in an amount not less than $1,000, is awarded to the law student who has demonstrated academic excellence in the areas of corporate and commercial law at the Faculty of Law.

In recommending a student for the award, the Faculty will take into account the performance of the student in Contract Law, Sale of Goods, Secured Transactions, Securities Regulation, and Business Associations.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Blakes LLP First Year Achievement Prize

Value: $2,500 | Number: 1

A prize in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to an undergraduate student who, in the opinion of the Faculty of Law, has shown excellence in first year studies and who has contributed to extracurricular service in the Faculty of Law.  Nominations for the service component of the prize will be supplied by the Law Students' Society.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Blakes LLP Legal Research and Writing Prize

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A prize of $1,000 is awarded to an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Law who has an interest in advocacy as demonstrated by academic excellence in the 1L Legal Research and Writing course. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Blakes Scholars Award

Value: $5,000 | Number: 1

An award of $5,000 is available to a full-time or part-time (minimum 9.0 units) undergraduate student entering second year in the Faculty of Law who has demonstrated academic excellence in the first year of law studies. Additional criteria may include financial need, membership in a historically disadvantaged group as outlined by the relevant human rights legislation in the Province of British Columbia, involvement in the community, extra-curricular activities at the University or at the Law School, and whether a student has multiple responsibilities and limited support.

If a student maintains a grade point average of 6.25 or higher, the award is automatically renewed for the third year of law studies.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Bonnie Bryan Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to continuing undergraduate students in the Faculty of Law. Preference is given to women students who are active in social justice issues relating to women or in furthering the place of women in the legal profession.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Borden Ladner Gervais Professional Excellence Award

Two awards of equal value are awarded to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Law who:

• are entering second year have completed first year and,
• are members of underrepresented communities, including individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, racialized, LGBTQ2S+, persons with a disability, neurodivergent or first generation to have obtained post-secondary education,
• demonstrates financial need, and
• have a commitment to professional or service excellence by consistently expanding their knowledge of the law, demonstrating the highest standards of integrity, offering innovative ideas, taking a collaborative approach and contributing to the community.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law..

British Columbia Superior Court Judges Scholarship*

One or two scholarships are awarded on the basis of general academic proficiency to continuing undergraduate students in the Faculty of Law. This award is established by the members of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Cameron Environmental Law Award*

One award is given to an undergraduate student entering the Faculty of Law with an interest in Environmental Law. Preference will be given to students who have overcome significant barriers to attending university or who are first-generation university attendees. Further preference will be given to those with financial need. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Canadian Bar Association BC Branch Entrance Scholarship*

An award is given to a student entering UVic Faculty of Law who has best shown a strong commitment to the ideals served by the Canadian Bar Association, which include promotion of Justice and/or law reform, through exemplary public or community service, as demonstrated by extra-curricular activities at educational institutions, volunteer work with community or charitable organizations, or any kind of public service activities. Membership in the Canadian Bar Association is not a requirement for eligibility to receive this award; however, it may be a factor taken into account by the Selection Committee in choosing the successful candidate.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Selection Committee of the CBA on behalf of the Faculty of Law.

Carfra Lawton LLP Scholarship

An award of $2,000 is given to a continuing or graduating undergraduate student in the Faculty of Law who has completed course work in Insurance Law or Civil Procedure and demonstrates an aptitude for or interest in practicing law in either of those areas. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Carolyn E. and Robert J. McCormick Indigenous Entrance Scholarship

One or more scholarships of at least $12,500 each are awarded to academically outstanding Canadian-born Indigenous undergraduate students entering the Faculty of Law JD/JID program.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Chief Michael A. Underwood Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an Indigenous undergraduate student continuing in the Faculty of Law who has contributed to the life of the Faculty of Law and the Indigenous community.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Chris Considine Prize in Evidence*

A prize is awarded to the student with first place standing in the Evidence course in the Faculty of Law. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law. This prize may be awarded to a graduating student.

Christopher Barran Memorial Fund*

One award of at least $1,000 will be given to a continuing undergraduate student in the Faculty of Law who has made an outstanding contribution to the law school community, including achievements in both academic and extracurricular activities (including athletics). In recognition of the life of the extraordinary individual for whom this scholarship is named, the recipient will have positively impacted their fellow students in a meaningful way.


The recipient is selected based on nominations received from fellow students, faculty and/or staff. Nomination letters (maximum 500 words) outlining the student’s contribution(s) must be submitted to the Dean’s Office, Faculty of Law, by June 1st.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Christopher S. Johnson Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an Indigenous undergraduate student continuing in the Faculty of Law. Preference is given to a student who is enrolled in the Law Centre program or has shown interest in criminal law and who has worked or is still working in aboriginal communities or other community organizations.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Christopher P. Kehler Memorial Prize in Family Law*

A scholarship is awarded to continuing or graduating undergraduate student in the Faculty of Law who has demonstrated excellence in a Family Law course, or an Advanced Family Law course. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Clark Wilson Recruitment Inclusion Award

Up to eight awards are given to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Law to assist with costs related to their participation in recruiting interviews or events as part of the Vancouver Bar Association Summer and Articling Recruitment Processes.

Costs include but are not limited to: travel, accommodation, meals, child care, lost wages, corporate attire and personal care. Students must have demonstrated financial need and must have at least one confirmed scheduled interview or event prior to applying.

Applications must be submitted to the Dean’s Office, Faculty of Law, no later than one week after Interview Call Day for the Recruitment Process in which the applicant is participating.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Class of 1981 Entrance Scholarship in Honour of Anne Fraser*

Clifford S. Watt Memorial Book Prize

A book prize to honour the memory of Clifford S. Watt, former Chief Legislative Counsel of the Province of British Columbia, is awarded to a first year student in the Faculty of Law who demonstrates academic excellence in LAW 104, Law, Legislation and Policy.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Colette Storrow Award

One award is given to an entering or continuing Indigenous student in the Faculty of Law with demonstrated financial need.  A student may not receive this award more than once. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia Award in Criminal Law Honouring Mr. Justice John Bouck

An award of $1,000 is given to a student in the Faculty of Law who has demonstrated academic excellence in the first year Criminal Law Course.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Cook Roberts Scholarship in Business Associations

A scholarship of $500 or such higher value as the donor may determine is awarded to a continuing or graduating undergraduate student in the Faculty of Law who has achieved high academic standing in the Business Associations course and who has participated substantially in extra-curricular activities in the Faculty of Law. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

Cook Roberts Scholarship in Civil Procedure

A scholarship of $500 or such higher value as the donor may determine is awarded to a continuing or graduating undergraduate student in the Faculty of Law who has achieved high academic standing in the Civil Procedure course and who has participated substantially in extra-curricular activities. Indigenous Perspectives Camp 25th Anniversary Award

One or more awards of $1,000 each are given to Indigenous undergraduate students entering or continuing in the Faculty of Law who are from one of the communities where the Indigenous Perspectives Camp (IPC) (formerly Aboriginal Awareness Camp) has taken place.

If no one is eligible then the award is given to a continuing student, with first preference for Indigenous students who have participated in IPC and second preference to non-Indigenous students who have participated in IPC.

Innis Christie Entrance Scholarship*

Insolvency Institute of Canada Prize in Insolvency Studies

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Law who have achieved the highest standing in LAW 312: Debtor and Creditor Relations, or in any other course in the Faculty of Law, should LAW 312 not be offered, with a focus on insolvency, bankruptcy or restructuring as determined by the Faculty. This award may be awarded to a graduating student.

Inuit Women or Two-Spirit Legal Scholar Award

One award of $20,000 is given to an entering or continuing undergraduate woman or two-spirit Inuit student in the Faculty of Law who have demonstrated leadership experience in their school or community. Applicants will be considered based on their Law admissions application. Payment of the award will be in two equal installments, half in Term 1 and half in Term 2 of the Winter Session.

The award is eligible to be renewed, at a value of $20,000 for each year of the student’s study in the Faculty of Law until completion of the degree, or for a maximum of three years, whichever is the shorter period. To be renewed a student must pass the academic year by the faculty standards. The student must also have demonstrated, in the opinion of the Director of the JD/JID Program and/or the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Relations, an ongoing commitment to leadership and achievement, whether this be in their home community or school community, amongst their peers, through their academic, extracurricular or personal pursuits.

Students registered in a co-op or work experience work term will be renewed when they next complete 12.0 or more units for credit in two terms, provided they remain in academic good standing. Any student who takes neither a co-op, work experience work-term, nor 80% of a full course load for more than one term may forfeit their scholarship.

Jeremy and Carolyn Webber Award in Law

Nomination letters (maximum 3 letters and maximum 500 words per letter) outlining the student's contribution(s) must be submitted to the Dean's Office, Faculty of Law, by June 1st. Preference is for students who have not received other UVic student awards in the current academic year.

The law firm of Tory, Tory, DesLauriers and Binnington has established the J.S.D. Tory Prize for Advocacy. Scotiabank Scholarship for Law Students

One scholarship valued at $10,000 will be awarded to a full-time (minimum 12 units) undergraduate student entering the Faculty of Law who self-identifies as Black, Indigenous or a Person of Colour (BIPOC) with demonstrated work or voluntary experience supporting BIPOC, marginalized or disadvantaged groups, and who intends on having a further positive impact by combatting racism and furthering inclusivity.

Students must submit a letter (maximum 350 words) self-identifying as a Black, Indigenous or Person of Colour and describe their work, volunteer experience and/or community involvement to the Law Admissions Officer no later than June 15th. Please note: This letter is separate from the Law admissions application.

The scholarship may be renewed for the student’s second and third year of study for a value of $10,000 each year. To be automatically renewed a student must pass the academic year by the university standards. Students registered in a co-op or work experience work term will automatically be renewed when they next complete 12 or more academic units in two terms, provided they remain in good academic standing. Any student not doing either a co-op, work experience work-term, or academic units for more than one term may forfeit their scholarship.

The scholarship was endowed in 1976 by the Honourable Robert A. Wootton, former Justice of the Supreme Court of B.C., to honour members of the legal profession of his own family.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law. 

Xa7limut (Ha-lay-mut) Jack Campo Indigenous Law Award

One or more awards of at least $5,000 each are given to continuing, undergraduate Indigenous students in the JD/JID program in the Faculty of Law.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

YLaw's Best Lawyering Award

Value: $700 | Number: 1

One award of $700 per term will be given to an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Law who has demonstrated outstanding skills attending to clients’ needs, representing clients at the Supreme Court and Provincial Court levels and who knows the value of proper legal representation. Recipients must have been enrolled in LAW 350, Law Centre: Clinical Law Term, during the previous academic year. This award may be given to graduating students.
