«Forms and Modalities of Volitional Intentionality. Husserl’s Volitional Investigations in his “Studies of the Structure of Consciousness»
Deciding on a course of action, initiating an action and executing an action – acting that is its own end, acting that is a means to achieve an end beyond the action these are various forms of willing. Acting impulsively, automatically and absent-mindedly, acting spontaneously, acting energetically these are various modalities of willing. Being driven, striving, tendentiously pulled, moved and directed, wishing, desiring are equally volitional phenomena. Is consciousness not in general volitional in being dynamic and teleological? Is the most basic perceptual exploration and synthesis not already an egoic activity?
Husserl’s extensive and detailed descriptive investigations of volitional intentionality and of intentionality as volitional belong to his non-philosophical, pure phenomenological research into the a priori structures and forms, modes and modalities of consciousness in its ownmost essence. Independent of their philosophical import for the foundation of ethics, the theory of the human and cultural sciences, for the ontology of the lifeworld or for transcendental phenomenology they are a substantial contribution to consciousness-research.
