WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - The articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas were delivered to the Senate on Tuesday.

The House of Representatives voted to impeach Secretary Mayorkas back in February, for what they was a willful and systematic refusal to enforce the country’s immigration laws.

“It is clear, and we look forward to laying out that case to the Senate, and to the members of the Senate individually, that Alejandro Mayorkas has violated the law, has violated the public trust,” said Rep. Ben Cline, (R-VA), one of the impeachment managers.

It is only the second time in the country’s history that a cabinet secretary has been impeached.

Two-thirds of the senate would need to vote in favor of convicting and removing Mayorkas.

The charges are expected to be dismissed or tabled quickly in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he sees the impeachment as an abuse of the process.

“Impeachment should never be used to settle a policy disagreement. Talk about awful precedents. This would set an awful president precedent for Congress,” said Sen. Schumer.

Yet many Senate Republicans continued to push for a full trial on Tuesday.

“A case for impeachment can be made and has been made here and that we must convene a trial to find these facts and reach an ultimate verdict as to guilt or innocence,” said Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT).

The senators are expected to be sworn in as jurors on Wednesday.
