WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - 99-year-old World War II veteran Mike Wilson and his late wife Esther were honored Wednesday in Washington, D.C. during Eastern Iowa Honor Flight’s 50th trip to the nation’s capital.

Wilson was one of the first members of the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight chapter and its leaders say he has been devoted to the organization’s mission since day one.

“He has been very generous, helped us get off the ground years and years ago, donating his own time, talent and most specifically treasure to help these flights take place,” said Darcy Moulin, Eastern Iowa Honor Flight PR Coordinator.

The chapter started back in 2009 and has brought around 4,500 veterans to visit war memorials in Washington.

“I was on that the second flight and I thought it was so great I had to be part of the organization. And so I’ve been advisor to the board since then,” said Wilson.

The Eastern Iowa Honor Flight chapter will be back in Washington in just a few weeks on May 28th.
