Motion to oust Speaker Johnson fails

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) job as House Speaker was officially on the line for all of a half hour Wednesday before it was revived. A member of his own party, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), made a move to oust him from his job.

Greene officially triggered a resolution called a “motion to vacate” against Johnson after threatening the move for more than a month.

“Our elected Republican Speaker Mike Johnson has aided and abetted the Democrats and the Biden Administration in destroying our country,” said Greene.

Greene said Johnson’s efforts to work with Democrats on keeping the government funded through the next fiscal year and passing aid for Ukraine were the final straws.

She added, “And gave Joe Biden and the Democrats everything they wanted. No different from how a Speaker Hakeem Jeffries would’ve done.”

Johnson was elected speaker back in October after former Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) gavel was taken from him in an unprecedented move. However, unlike McCarthy, a majority of the House stepped in and saved Johnson including the Democrats.

By a vote of 359-43 and seven members voting present, the motion was laid upon the table. Afterwards Johnson said, “Hopefully, this is the end of the personality politics and the frivolous character assassination that has defined the 118th Congress.”
