WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Frontrunners President Joe Biden and Former President Donald Trump easily won in the Michigan primaries on Tuesday night, but there was also a sizable 101,000 “uncommitted” protest votes in the Democratic race.

“Yesterday was a resounding victory. 100,000 Michiganders came out, cast a ballot for hope. A hope for a pro-peace president,” said Dearborn, MI Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, one of the leading voices in the “uncommitted” movement.

The group Listen to Michigan encouraged voters to vote “uncommitted,” as a protest vote against President Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war.

“We are uncommitted to Joe Biden. We will not be complicit in genocide. We demand the president, his administration and the Democratic Party stop our country’s complicity and funding of genocide now,” said Layla Elabed, campaign manager of Listen to Michigan.

President Biden issued a statement on Tuesday night about the win in Michigan but did not address about the uncommitted votes, which the group took issue with.

Former President Trump appears to be on the path to winning about 70 percent of the vote in Michigan. But his opponent Nikki Haley’s national spokesperson, Olivia Perez-Cubas, issued a statement after Haley’s loss, and said that a sizable percentage of voters did not support Biden or Trump. She said that as long as Trump is the Republican candidate, the party will keep losing.

“Let this serve as another warning sign that what has happened in Michigan will continue to play out across the country. So long as Donald Trump is at the top of the ticket, Republicans will keep losing to the socialist left. Our children deserve better.”

Yet Republican Party Chair Pete Hoekstra believes Trump’s Michigan win is a clear sign that the support for the former president is strong.

“The numbers clearly indicate the president continues to perform very, very strongly in Michigan,” said Hoekstra.

The next stop for election 2024 is Super Tuesday on March 5th, when 15 states and American Samoa will head to the polls.
