Guidelines for campus gatherings

Making time for friends and building community are important parts of university life and we’ve tried to make the campus an inviting and safe place to do so. If you’re going to gather with friends on campus, here are a few key things to keep in mind.

Keep it small & responsible

The university is committed to creating a safe learning, living and working environment for all community members who access university resources, activities and spaces. Large on-campus parties can have a negative impact on community members who are living, studying and working on campus. Out of respect for others, please keep your social gatherings small and be mindful of your noise levels.

Additionally, large parties increase the risk of COVID-19 spread. Control the risk by keeping your gatherings small.

It’s also important to note that UVic does not permit open alcohol containers and/or consumption of alcohol in public areas on campus.

Expectations for all students

It’s important to remember that the university campus is private property. If you’re coming to campus to meet friends, please be sure you respect campus rules.

As a UVic student, your behaviour on UVic property is governed by a number of policies, including the Non-Academic Misconduct Policy. The latter applies to things like dangerous or disruptive behaviour and unauthorized access to areas of campus. Violations of these polices could affect your status as a student at UVic.

As per our Buildings and Grounds policy, overnight camping and tents are not permitted on university grounds.

Residence Complex

Only university-approved events and gatherings are permitted in or around Residence Complex buildings. These expectations are outlined in the Residence Contract, Schedule D, Section 4.4.

In addition, a no-guest policy is in effect for the month of September every year. This means that guests, including UVic students who don’t live in on-campus housing, are not permitted anywhere in the residence complex including residence buildings, adjacent residence parking lots 1 and 5 or the grounds around and between Residence Complex buildings.

Safety resources

If you feel unsafe while on campus, reach out to Campus Security. Safe Walk and Campus Alone programs are available 24/7.

Events & activities

There are so many fun things to get out and do on and around our campus. Check out the UVic Events Calendar for a list of events so you can get out there and have fun.

Thank you for doing your part to keep our campus, and each other, safe.
