Special Access

The Special Access admission category is for students whose previous studies were impacted by health, disability, family circumstances or similar challenges.

After applying for general admission to UVic, you can submit an appeal. We'll consider how both your educational history and your non-educational achievements indicate an ability to succeed at university.

To apply as a Special Access applicant, you must:

  • be a first-time student at UVic
  • be a BC resident
  • be at least 23 years of age on the first day of classes
  • meet all prerequisites for your intended faculty or program.

If you've already attempted a full year (or equivalent) of university-level courses, you're not eligible for Special Access.

How to apply

  1. Apply for general admission to UVic.
  2. If your initial application is denied, contact your admission assistant to discuss your candidacy and learn how to submit an appeal.

Your admission assistant will provide instructions on preparing an appeal package that includes:

  • a personal letter describing the nature and extent of your circumstances and demonstrating the impact these circumstances have had on your educational achievements
  • a resume including work experience since leaving school
  • two references from people who are not related to you and can comment on your potential for academic success.
    • References must be provided on forms provided by UVic.
