Hello everyone!
My name is Dakota Nelson. I am Musgamagw Dzawada'enuxw from Kingcome Inlet (part of the Kwakwaka'wakw nations) and Tahltan from Telegraph Creek.
While studying at UVic, I joined the Native Students Union (NSU) as Councillor-at-Large for the last two years of my degree. I'm so glad that I got involved! The NSU helped me gain a sense of belonging and community that contributed to my success, and now I have the opportunity to help others in the same way.
As an Indigenous Student Recruitment Officer, I'm here to help you navigate the big transition to university and discover everything that's available to you at UVic.
My advice to future university students
Join clubs and network as much as possible! It's so important to find and build your community as soon as you can. I waited until my third year of university to really branch out, and I wish I had started earlier.
Also, be sure to reach out for help when you need it. There are many people at UVic who are eager to help you on your learning journey.
