Matthew Wilkinson, a fourth-year electrical engineering student, completed his co-op work term as a manufacturing controls intern at Tesla. Operating at the lithium refinery outside of Corpus Christi, Texas, Matthew assisted in various tasks, including ensuring the refinery’s readiness, developing commissioning procedures, creating preventative maintenance plans, and aiding in the calibration of instrumentation.

Highlights of working at Tesla

Matthew described Tesla’s work environment as “open and engaging”, where he had the opportunity to collaborate with engineers, technicians, electricians, and other maintenance crew members.

Reflecting on his experience outside the refinery, Matthew shared, “One of the highlights of my internship was getting to go on a few work trips to visit the other facilities and projects within the company.

I had the opportunity to assist in hands-on work on some other projects that differed from the work I was doing day-to-day during my internship. Outside of work I got to enjoy the beautiful coastal Texas weather and ride jet skis as well as shoot some guns!”

Working in the electric vehicle industry

Mathew’s career goal after completing his program at UVic is to work in the EV industry. “Tesla has a great internship program to provide students with the experience to progress into a full-time job!

They just so happen to have these opportunities in the U.S.” Despite being away from home, Matthew emphasised the importance of seizing significant opportunities in life. He reflected, “Moving to another country and navigating life alone in a new place can be intimidating but enjoy it while you can because you’ll miss it when you’re gone!”

Advice for other students

“Go for it! Apply for as many opportunities as you can and as early as you can even if you have no relevant work experience.

Co-ops are a great way to set you apart from other students and give you an opportunity to see what work you enjoy doing before you graduate. International Co-ops are a great way to explore another country while you work and take a break from school!”
