A male student stands on a bicycle pathway. He wears a helmet and has a bike at his side. There is a child riding a bike beside him.

Physical health and recreation student Jacob Cook jumped at the opportunity to work with the Pacific Institute for Sports Excellence facility (PISE), a local non-profit organization that creates active living opportunities for children and adults of all levels and abilities.

Teaching fundamental skills

As a cycling and physical literacy summer camp leader, Cook delivered day camp programs to taught children fundamental cycling skills along with bicycle safety.

He was also responsible for incorporating games and activities that developed a variety of movement skills, and for inspiriting campers' passion for active lifestyles.

The impact of co-op

"At PISE we choose to hire co-op students as we know they are passionate about learning opportunities in a field relevant to their education," says Eden Levinson, supervisor of physical literacy programs at PISE.

"Jacob is an avid cyclist in his personal life and we were excited that he was able to share this interest with our campers."

The impact of co-op

"Hiring co-op students like Jamil gives us an opportunity to shape their development and inspire their imagination," says McCarten.

"The co-op students from UVic are invaluable for their can-do attitude, willingness to learn and incredible technological literacy."
