Capital and space planning
The University of Victoria is committed to providing high-quality education and an exceptional student experience. We prioritize excellence in research and teaching, foster a diverse and welcoming environment, and embrace sustainability. Our Five Year Capital Plan aligns with our academic priorities outlined the Planning and Budget Framework, Aspiration 2030, Indigenous Plan, Campus Plan, and Institutional Accountability Plan. Our overarching goal is to create a campus that offers outstanding teaching and learning experiences within spaces that encourage collaboration and connection. The Capital Plan is a vital document that outlines our future infrastructure needs.
Capital projects fit into six different categories: 1) new priority, 2) whole asset replacement or renewal, 3) student housing, 4) routine capital, 5) carbon neutral, and 6) linear infrastructure. The following, in priority order, are the major capital projects for the campus:
- Student Housing (Category 3)
Approximately 500 new student housing beds will be created, featuring pod-style dormitories and studio units. - Mearns Centre for Learning - McPherson Library Interiors Modernization and Seismic Upgrading (Category 2)
The library is a central hub on campus, serving students, faculty, staff, and the community. Seismic upgrades and interior renovations will provide innovative and contemporary spaces for teaching, research, and community engagement. - Jamie Cassels Centre Farquhar Auditorium Seismic Upgrade (Category 2)
Improvements will focus on structural enhancements while preserving the acoustic qualities of the performance venue. - Petch Building Seismic Upgrade (Category 2)
The project includes interior and exterior reinforcement of the building structure. - Fraser Building Seismic Upgrade (Category 2)
The Murray and Ann Fraser Building, home to the Faculty of Law, will undergo seismic upgrades and safety improvements. - Accessible and Active Transportation Improvement Program – University Drive (Category 6)
This program will enhance pedestrian and cycling access on University Drive. The project aligns with sustainability goals to increase sustainable travel mode share to 70%.
