Biography

Hailing from Vancouver, BC, Michelle Feng joins the Victoria Symphony as Principal Oboe in 2024. She formerly held the position of Associate Principal Oboe of the Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra. Since leaving Hawai’i in 2022, she has enjoyed a busy freelance career, frequently performing as guest Principal Oboe with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and guest Principal Cor Anglais with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Her “authoritative, soulful” playing has enraptured audiences across the globe (Your Observer News, 2015). Michelle is a graduate of the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, where she studied with Allan Vogel.

Aside from her orchestral career, Michelle is a dedicated educator. She has worked with students of all ages, from beginners playing their first notes, to doctoral candidates at the University of British Columbia. As a teacher, Michelle provides a welcoming experience for students of all backgrounds. In addition to a wealth of performing expertise, she offers insights on performance psychology and musician wellness, helping students to feel and play their best.

When not playing the oboe, you can find her gardening, birding, or playing with her cat.
