Brief Biography

Jennifer Stillwell studied at the University of Manitoba and graduated with a BFA Honors degree in 1995. In 2000 she received an MFA in Studio Art with highest distinction from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and she has since exhibited across Canada and internationally.

Working with a wide variety of materials, media and circumstances she has created responsive large-scale installations in post-industrial spaces including at the Darling Foundry (Montreal) and at Triple Candie (New York).  Other solo exhibitions include YYZ Artists’ Outlet (Toronto) and a survey show at Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art (Winnipeg).  Considering ‘place’ and materiality she works to deconstruct and layer meaning with reductive approaches to form.

She recently completed a permanent outdoor public sculpture for the City of Winnipeg. Among many distinctions Jennifer was a semi-finalist for the preeminent Sobey Art Award in both 2002 and 2006.
