How do I attend a seminar?

Sessions are normally offered twice per year.  Once scheduled, sessions will be advertised on the HR Learning Calendar and Campus Checklist.

These seminars are for all regular faculty and staff wherever you are in your career path, to help you improve your financial roadmap and achieve your financial goals.

These sessions will not provide information on the UVic pension plan. For information on the UVic pension plan, please visit the Pension Services website.

Build Your Budget

The amount of money you need at retirement depends largely on how much you plan to spend. Going further than the general “rules of thumb,” this interactive workshop guides employees through the process of budgeting for the various phases of retirement. Participants will learn to budget for today and tomorrow.

Learn to Invest

This introductory-level seminar provides an unbiased look at investment concepts and principles. Designed to simplify terminology and increase comfort with investment decisions, it helps participants understand the forces that drive the markets.

Attendance for these sessions is limited to only those faculty and staff who are within 5 years of retirement. This will help to ensure a more current and accurate retirement financial picture thus enabling you to make better informed decisions on your approaching retirement.

We understand that retirement planning is more than just numbers; you also want the confidence to transition from a structured work life to a new chapter that will be meaningful and rewarding. These seminars are specifically designed to meet the retirement planning needs of those retiring in the next 5 years.

Countdown to Retirement

This seminar encourages participants to consider key lifestyle decisions carefully and well in advance of their retirement date.

This session will explore the physical and emotional challenges of transitioning from work to retirement and will provide an understanding of the key contributors to a satisfying retirement lifestyle.

Sources of Retirement Income

Retirement income can be paid in many forms, each with its own rules, advantages, and restrictions. This seminar provides participants with detailed information about the various sources of retirement income—government and employer provided, as well as individual savings. We also look at forms of pension, transfer options, LIFs, LIRAs, and annuities.

Legal checkup seminars

How do I attend a seminar?

These seminars are for all regular faculty and staff wherever you are in your career path, to help you improve your financial roadmap and achieve your financial goals.

What information is presented at the seminar?

In the event of serious illness or death, we want our wishes for disposing assets and health decisions to be respected. This is where legal affairs planning comes into play. This seminar provides a “legal check-up” to encourage participants to take a proactive approach when it comes to estate and personal planning.

  • Estate planning (wills, intestacy rules, beneficiary designations, insurance, taxes, gifts, and trusts)
  • Personal planning (powers of attorney, living will, guardianship, and travel insurance)
  • Impact of life changes such as death of spouse, divorce, remarriage, and illness

UVic pension information sessions

Pension Services offers Pension Information Seminars annually, normally in the spring (for all plan members) and in the fall (for those nearing retirement).  Those sessions are plan-specific, as they include a summary of your pension plan and an overview of the benefits available from the plan. Space is often limited, and some sessions may be by invitation only.

Please contact Pension Services for more information, at pensions@uvic.ca.  As soon as they are available, dates of upcoming seminars will be announced on the Pension Services website.
