One grant, worth almost $2.3 million, is called “Archipelagos of Indigenous-led Resurgence for Planetary Health.” The shared leadership of this grant includes School of Indigenous Governance Director Hōkūlani Aikau and School of Public Administration’s Impact Chair in Transformative Governance for Planetary Health Heather Castleden. Five Indigenous early career researchers are co-applicants, including Indigenous Governance Assistant Professor Dawn Smith.

Cheryl Recollet, a Wiikwemkoong Unceded First Nation member, is exploring Anishinaabe governance and treaty relations in UVic's Indigenous Governance PhD program.
Mowatt, a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow in Indigenous Governance and at the Centre for Indigenous Research and Community-led Engagement (CIRCLE) at UVic, says relations between Indigenous nations and the Canadian state continue to be framed in ways that undermine Indigenous sovereignty.

University of Victoria Indigenous Governance (IGOV) students started off their term in a good way, arriving by canoe at the Songhees Nation and asking for permission to live, study and work in their territory.

Jasmine Dionne, a UVic PhD student in political science, is working with the Cree, Metis, Chipewyan and Dene community of Saka Wiyiniwak to reimplement Indigenous legal principles, as part of a three-year scholarship, announced this month by the Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation. She is one of only 16 Canadian doctoral students receiving a $180,000 award.
Nikki Sanchez, PhD student in Indigenous Governance at UVic, is one of four editors of a new book, Spirits of the Coast: Orcas in Science, Art and History, released May 15, 2020 by the Royal BC Museum.
