MSW Foundation program

The MSW Foundation (MSWF) program (non-BSW entry) is grounded in our commitment to socially just social work. It is intended for students with at least two years of full time human services experience, or equivalent (approximately 3000 hours), and an undergraduate degree other than a BSW.

The MSWF program is offered every second year (on odd numbered years).

Delivery method

The Foundation core courses are delivered full-time on-campus in a cohort model over 3 consecutive terms (from September-August).

Students in the MSWF program must complete 16.5 units, consisting of the required Foundation core courses and a 450 hour Foundation field education placement. For further information regarding the Foundation core courses, please see the Delivery method and course plan page.

Once students have completed the Foundation program requirements, they will progress into to the MSWA (Advanced) or MSWI (Indigenous Specialization), with permission, to complete their MSW degree by distance education.

* To be eligible to proceed to the MSWA or MSWI program, students must maintain a 5.0 (B) average and be in good standing with the Faculty of Graduate Studies for the duration of their Foundation course work.

Are you ready for graduate education?

Admissions to all of our MSW programs are highly competitive. We particularly look for candidates who can evidence a “fit” with our curriculum, Mission Statement and Program Objectives. Students must ensure that they have read through and reflected on this information so as to be able to demonstrate in their application that UVic’s MSW program is right for them.

Graduate courses in our program require about 9-12 hours of work per week per course. Graduate education, even if by distance, can never be done “off the side of your desk.” Time management skills are essential for success. Classroom courses involve 3 hours per week per course, plus about 6-9 hours of reading and assignment preparation. On-line courses require about 3-4 hours per week of reviewing course materials and participating in weekly on-line postings and discussion, with an additional 6-8 hours a week of assignment preparation.

Technology requirements

All students admitted to the MSW program must have computer and high speed internet access for the duration of their program of studies in order to participate in courses delivered by web based learning, and for program administration purposes. Students require a UVic Netlink ID, and it is strongly recommended that students use a UVic e-mail address. Visit the UVic Learning Anywhere site for more information about distance education.
