Professor Casswell practiced litigation in Toronto prior to being appointed to the faculty as assistant professor in 1980. He was promoted to associate professor in 1983 and to professor in 1992. He served as associate dean from 1990 to 1993. Professor Casswell's teaching and scholarship focus on evidence, immigration and refugee law, and lesbian and gay rights law. He is a co-author of Fundamentals of Trial Techniques (Canadian Edition) and the author of AIDS, Ethics and Law, and Lesbians, Gay Men, and Canadian Law, in addition to numerous journal articles. Professor Casswell was a member of the Law Reform Commission of Canada Permanent Health Law Consultative Group from 1988 to 1992 and was a founding co-chair of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Issues Section of the Canadian Bar Association (British Columbia Branch). He has received the Faculty of Law’s Master Teacher Award twice and been awarded the Faculty’s Service Award.
