Kim Hart

It was a great pleasure to earn my LL.B from UVic Law. I was admitted to the Faculty in 1990 in the ‘mature student’ category at the age of 33. Immediately following graduation I served as a law clerk to the Justices of the British Columbia Supreme Court and then spent a number of years in private practice in Victoria, primarily in the areas of family law and estate litigation. I returned to the Faculty of Law as an instructor in 1998 and was appointed an Assistant Teaching Professor in 2000. For the next 5 years I taught Legal Research and Writing, Family Law, Civil Procedure, and Children and the Law.  During that time I was also the Southern Director of the Akitsiraq Law Program, a revolutionary law program for Inuit students delivered in Iqaluit, Nunavut. I served as Associate Dean, Academic and Student Relations at the Faculty of Law from 2005 to 2009 and then moved to UVic’s central administration building to join the university’s 14-member senior administration team.

I served as Associate Vice-President, Faculty Relations and Academic Administration within the Provost’s Office from 2009 until my retirement from the university in 2014. I was responsible for all faculty relations matters, including acting as Chief Spokesperson for the University in negotiation of the faculty collective contract and the support and training of Deans and Chairs with regard to the interpretation and application of that contract and related policies. I was also in-house legal counsel on matters arising from the academic program.
