JD + MBA double degree program

The JD+MBA double degree program is composed of a selected combination of courses from the Faculty of Law and the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. Upon completion of both degrees you will be well prepared to engage as a leader within both business and legal professions.

Application procedures

  • Apply separately to both the Faculty of Law and the Gill Graduate School of Business Daytime MBA program.
  • Indicate on both applications that you are applying for the double degree program.
  • Write and submit GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) with MBA application and LSAT score with JD application.

Admissions decisions

  • A limited number of students (a maximum of five) may be accepted in both the Gill Graduate School of Business Daytime MBA program and the Faculty of Law JD program.
  • The Faculty of Law and the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business will consult with each other to determine which applicants will be admitted to the double degree program.
  • Upon acceptance to either the Faculty of Law or the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, applicants will receive confirmation of the decision regarding their admission to the JD+MBA.

Program requirements

Students who apply and are accepted into both the Law Faculty JD and Business Faculty MBA programs may earn both degrees concurrently with modified requirements for each. The two degrees normally require five years of study, whereas double degrees may be completed in four years. For information on the MBA program requirements, please see the UVic Graduate Calendar.

Students in the JD/JID joint degree program are not eligible to enrol in the JD+MBA double degree program.

After successful completion of first-year law, the JD portion of the program requires a student to complete 29 units of law courses or Faculty of Law approved courses, including the following:

  • 3 units of MBA courses in lieu of the Faculty of Law's 3-unit, non-law course option in other faculties;
  • MBA 598 or MBA 596 – Research Report in lieu of 3 units of LAW 399;
  • All compulsory JD courses, including the major paper requirement;
  • LAW 314, 315, 316, 317, 345, or with the approval of the associate dean, alternative courses where a required course is not reasonably available to the student; law electives to bring the total law units to 29.

To complete the MBA portion of the program, a student must complete a total of 21.0 units of MBA courses as identified below:

  • MBA 500, 501, 502, 510, 515, 520, 530, 535, 540, 544, 550, 553, 555, 570, and 598
  • An appropriate research methods course of 1.5 units from another department within the Faculty of Graduate Studies in lieu of MBA 585.
  • 2 MBA co-op work terms. (Co-op is generally mandatory but co-op requirements may be waived for students with significant prior work experience).
    • Students enrolled in the JD+MBA double degree program are not eligible to enrol in the Law Co-op Program. Students admitted to the Law Co-op Program during first year law and who subsequently enrol in the JD+MBA double degree program shall withdraw from the Law Coop Program.
