LLM Submission Deadlines

These dates do not apply to students completing a PhD degree.

The deadlines below are based on the very last day you can submit, attend a specific convocation deadline, and not pay the next term's fees. You may also contact the  to create personalized deadlines so that you can make use of the Completion Postponement Fee Adjustment (CPFA) or for any other reason.

Submission deadlines are established by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and cannot be extended. Timelines allow for very little leeway for unexpected delays. We strongly encourage all who can meet earlier deadlines to do so.

Select the term in which you plan to complete your thesis.

To complete during the SUMMER term 2024 (for November 2024 convocation):

(discuss these dates with your supervisory committee): submit draft copy of entire thesis to supervisory committee for feedback and review. Note that often supervisory committees like to see the entire draft twice and will need time to do a thorough review.

Friday, May 17th 2024 (noon Pacific Standard Time): Submit your external examiner nominations to the  (at least four weeks prior to delivery of thesis to external examiner). The external examiner nominations should only be submitted after the entire supervisory committee has reviewed the entire thesis and considers it near-exam ready.

(during this time): Receive your supervisory committee’s final revisions (allow at least two weeks to incorporate and obtain sign-off from supervisory committee).

Friday, June 14th 2024 (noon Pacific Standard Time): Email an electronic copy of your thesis to the  to send to external examiner (allowing six weeks for review). You must also include your supervisory committee's approval of the exam-ready thesis. A forwarded email is acceptable.  Also, submit the thesis/dissertation withholding form, or indicate that it is not applicable.

Monday, July 15th 2024:  Submit an application to graduate. To do this, you must log in to your My Page account, navigate to your 'Graduation' tab, complete the application and submit online.  (applications submitted after this date will be subject to a $10 late fee).  Also, register for a UVicSpace account

Friday, July 26th 2024: Receive comments/approval from your external examiner (allowing four weeks for supervisory committee and graduate director to review evaluation and for you to make revisions and obtain final sign-off from your supervisory committee).  Use the Faculty of Graduate Studies thesis format checklist and sample pages to ensure your final version complies with their requirements.

Friday, August 23rd 2024: Once you have received final sign off from all supervisory committee members, forward approval email to  for forwarding to Graduate Admissions and Records. Your UVicSpace account will then be activated so that you may submit your entire thesis to UVicSpace for confirmation of your formatting by Graduate Admissions and Records. You can no longer make content edits to the thesis at this point.

Friday, August 30th 2024 (noon Pacific Standard Time): The graduate program coordinator will submit the signed Thesis approval form and Letter of Recommendation to the Graduate Admissions and Records Office.
