Statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Dear UVic community,

On March 21, we recognize the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This day draws attention to the ongoing realities of racial and cultural prejudice and xenophobia, and the many ways they intersect with other forms of oppression. The overt discrimination and microaggressions experienced by members of racialized communities are the consequence of the structural racism that still exists in all our communities and cannot continue to be tolerated. I would be remiss if I did not recognize the oppressive and inequitable systems of power that the university has been built upon and the barriers to equity that these systems create.

As a leader, it is critical that I acknowledge the ways that I continue to benefit from these systems of structural racism and white supremacy. I understand my obligations when it comes to dismantling these systems of oppression and I stand against racial bias, intolerance and oppression. I am committed to listening and supporting the ongoing work that is needed to support racial equity, diversity, and inclusion at UVic and beyond. 

I urge all members of the UVic community to continue to dedicate ourselves to working toward actions that help us realize our collective commitments to equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism. I encourage everyone to speak up against racial prejudice and to contribute to the Equity Action Plan by signing up for a Conversation Cafe and responding to the online survey.
