Emergency bursaries

These bursaries are intended to assist with a student's emergent need. Unless otherwise indicated, applicants must email to be considered for any of these bursaries. There is no deadline to apply.

Undergraduate students must be registered in a minimum of 4.5 units in the term in which they receive a bursary (3.0 units for students with a permanent disability). They must also maintain registration in a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks of study in the term in which they receive a bursary.

Graduate students must meet and maintain full-time registration as defined by the Faculty of Graduate Studies in a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks of study in each term in which they receive a bursary.

Bursaries marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Charles and Ruth Haywood Memorial Emergency Fund

This fund is intended to provide assistance to undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of citizenship, who have demonstrated financial need.  Students may inquire about their eligibility for this fund with Student Awards and Financial Aid throughout the academic year.

Daniel Jacob Memorial Bursary

Through the initial generosity of the Alma Mater Society and the ongoing support of the University of Victoria Student's Society, a special fund has been established to commemorate Daniel Jacob, a student who died accidentally in November, 1981.

The fund is open to all undergraduate students, regardless of citizenship, who have demonstrable financial need and who may otherwise be forced to postpone or discontinue the academic career.

Faculty of Education Emergency Bursary

One or more bursaries, to a maximum of $1,500 each, are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the Faculty of Education. Part time students are eligible (undergraduate students registered in a minimum of 6.0 units for credit in two terms and graduate students registered in a minimum of 1.5 units per term). The bursary is intended to offer students one-time financial assistance per term in the event of an unforeseen emergency or circumstance while attending the University of Victoria.

Faculty of Human and Social Development Indigenous Student Emergency Fund

One or more bursaries, with a maximum value of $700 each per year, are awarded to Indigenous students (First Nations status or non-status, Inuit, Métis) enrolled in the Faculty of Human and Social Development in the event of an unforeseen emergency or circumstance while attending the University of Victoria.

The funding is intended to assist with financial emergencies including, but not limited to:

  • medical, optical, or dental expenses
  • family crisis, community obligations, or cultural commitments and responsibilities
  • unanticipated expenses that are beyond the student's control and that directly impact their ability to complete the term.

Applicants are advised to contact the Faculty of Human and Social Development Indigenous Student Support Centre.

Faculty of Humanities Emergency Bursary

One or more bursaries, to a maximum of $1,500 each, are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the Faculty of Humanities. Part-time students are eligible (undergraduate students registered in a minimum of 6.0 units for credit in two terms and graduate students registered in a minimum of 1.5 units per term). The bursary is intended to offer students one-time financial assistance in the event of an unforeseen emergency or circumstance while attending the University of Victoria. International students are eligible for this emergency bursary.

Faculty of Law Indigenous Emergency Assistance Fund

Emergency bursaries are awarded to Canadian-born Indigenous students enrolled in full time or part time studies in the Faculty of Law in the event of an unforeseen emergency or circumstance. The funding is intended to assist with financial emergencies including, but not limited to:

  • medical, optical, or dental expenses
  • family crisis, community obligations, or cultural commitments and responsibilities
  • unanticipated expenses that are beyond the student's control and that directly impact their ability to complete the term.

Faculty of Social Sciences Emergency Bursary

One or more bursaries, to a maximum of $1,000 each, are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Part-time students are eligible (undergraduate students registered in a minimum of 6.0 units for credit in two terms and graduate students registered in a minimum of 1.5 units per term). International students are eligible for this emergency bursary.

Gustavson School of Business Emergency Bursary

One or more bursaries, to a maximum of $500 each, are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the Peter B Gustavson School of Business. The bursary is intended to offer students financial assistance in the event of an unforeseen emergency or circumstance while attending the University of Victoria. International students are eligible for this emergency bursary.

Ian McDougall and Friends Student Assistance Endowment

This fund is intended to provide assistance to undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculty of Fine Arts of up to $1,000 each, regardless of citizenship, who have demonstrated financial need.

John F. Baker Emergency Fund*

Student Crisis Fund

Tuition Assistance Bursary Fund

Students who experience financial crisis during their school year are welcome to meet with a Financial Aid Officer in Student Awards and Financial Aid to discuss their extenuating circumstances.

UVic tuition assistance bursaries are awarded to students with exceptional financial need and are intended to assist students completing their program; they are not intended for students commencing a UVic program.

The recipient must be in good standing with UVic. 

First preference will be given to students facing exceptional circumstances beyond their control. Applicants whose need is caused by their own negligence resulting in bankruptcy or default may have no claim against this fund. Where the amount of the assessed award is insignificant relative to the total funds needed, no award will be made.
