Call for applications for an Aspiration Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship (Neuropsychology) at University of Victoria

Position Title: Post-Doctoral Fellow (PDF) within the Behavioural Research on Aging and Illness in Neuropsychology (BRAIN) Lab at UVic

Timeline: Negotiable start date between July (exact date TBD – pending UVic funding announcement date) and December 1st, 2024

Duration: 2 years

Salary: *See competition details below - This is a full-time position, with $50,000 CAD/year base salary (plus additional employer contributions to CPP, EI, and extended health and dental plans), and high likelihood of opportunity to teach 1 course/year as a sessional instructor (paid on top of base salary).

Description

The BRAIN Lab in the Department of Psychology at the University of Victoria invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF) through the Aspiration Post-Doctoral Fellowships program at UVic (see this website for additional details – note Stage 1 deadline of April 15, 2024 below). This is a research PDF position. The PDF will provide direct support to, and collaborate with, Dr. Theone Paterson on grant-funded research studies investigating relationships between physical health, health behaviours, psychological wellbeing, and cognitive functioning across the lifespan.

Qualifications for this position

  • The research interests of the PDF are expected to fit into the above context.
  • A PhD (or PsyD) in neuropsychology, health psychology, or a closely related field, is required by the start date (see eligibility below for additional information).
  • Preferred qualifications include research (and if applicable clinical) experience related to cognitive aging and cognitive decline, neurological disorders, and/or mobile health research.
  • A strong background in statistics and longitudinal data analysis, including familiarity with R, other relevant software (SPSS and/or MPlus) is required.

    • develop skill in grant writing,
    • develop skill in and pursue undergraduate teaching,
    • to pursue professional registration as a Psychologist in British Columbia, if applicable
    • co-supervise graduate, honours, and undergraduate students, and
    • to contribute to the professional development activities within the lab, department, and at UVic more broadly

The selection procedure will take place in two stages – For Stage 1, documents should be sent only to Dr. Paterson.

  • An article you have published or written in the last three years.
  • A summary of a proposed research project of relevance to the work done in the BRAIN Lab (see lab website and Paterson’s faculty profile - 1000 words max.)
  • A transcript of your graduate studies
  • 2 letters of reference (sent to tpaterson@uvic.ca) or contact information for two referees willing to provide a reference by phone/Zoom.
  • An indication of any available complementary external funding (e.g. Banting, SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR, MSHRBC Trainee Award, etc.).

For STAGE 2, deadline June 5, 2024 – (UVic wide application process):

*Only one candidate will be retained for Stage 2 – to move on to selection at the university level.

Eligibility for Aspiration Post-Doctoral Fellowship (see website for full details)

  • Proposed research will be evaluated in part on its ability to make an impact through fundamental inquiry or impact that is aligned with Aspiration 2030’s impact areas.
  • The award must recruit a new post-doctoral fellow to UVic. Post-doctoral fellows who currently hold or have previously held a post-doctoral appointment at UVic are not eligible.
  • Candidates must have fulfilled all degree requirements for a PhD or PhD- equivalent degree prior to appointment, but no longer than 2.5 years prior to the start of the award.
    • To support equity, extensions to these parameters will be considered in cases where applicants have experienced other career interruptions as defined by the Tri-Agencies
  • There is no citizenship requirement, but PDFs must be legally entitled to work full-time in Canada by the fellowship start date.

  • This funding opportunity follows UVic’s Post-doctoral Fellows policy.
  • Successful Aspiration Post-doctoral Fellows are required to apply for at least one external Fellowship each year (e.g., Banting, SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR, MSHRBC Trainee Award)
  • In the case that a post-doctoral fellowship is relinquished before the end of the two-year period, the OVPRI funds will be returned to the OVPRI for future competitions.
