Hiring a post-doctoral fellow

Post-doctoral fellows (PDFs) at UVic conduct independent research under the supervision of a UVic faculty member. In general, PDFs are either grant funded or externally funded and usually start the fellowship no more than four years after completing their PhD.

The Office of the Vice-President Academic and Provost’s supports the SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships top-up fund.

As per the SSHRC guidelines, these fellowships support the most promising Canadian new scholars in the social sciences and humanities, and assist them in establishing a research base at an important time in their research careers. The purpose is to provide stipendiary support to recent PhD graduates who are:

  • undertaking original research;
  • publishing research findings;
  • developing and expanding personal research networks;
  • broadening their teaching experience;
  • preparing for research-intensive careers within and beyond academia; and
  • preparing to become competitive in national research grant competitions.

The Executive Director, Academic Resource Planning leads this process annually in the summer, working with Deans.

Hiring a student

Hiring a student is a great way to support your research, and provides students with valuable hands-on learning experiences.

The Valerie Kuehne Undergraduate Research Awards (VKURA) provides an internship opportunity for first- and second-year students to gain research-enriched and applied experiences in their discipline or field of study, under the supervision of a faculty researcher. Central funds support this award, and students are paid for their contributions to supporting research.

Hiring an undergraduate or graduate co-op student may also be a great way to support your research at UVic.
