About Elizabeth Adjin-Tettey

Dr. Elizabeth Adjin-Tettey is appointed as Associate Vice-President Academic Programs from June 1, 2023 to June 30, 2028. In this role, she leads the development and redesign of academic programs, oversees reviews of existing programs as part of the university’s quality assurance reporting, creates domestic partnership agreements, and leads experiential learning through oversight of the Co-operative Education Program and Career Services and the Division of Learning, Teaching Support and Innovation.

Elizabeth obtained her Doctorate in Law from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Master of Laws (Calgary), Master of Laws (Queen’s) and Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of Ghana. Elizabeth is a Professor in the Faculty of Law. She received the Terry J Wuester Teaching Award in 2019. Elizabeth previously served as Associate Dean Administration and Research (Faculty of Law), Chair of the Employment Equity Advisory Group of the University Human Rights Committee, Member of the UVic’s Bargaining Team, Member of the Joint Committee on the Administration of the Collective Agreement, co-Chair of the Joint Committee to Investigate Gendered Salary Anomalies and Member of the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society Program Committee.  She was a Director of the British Columbia Law Institute. Elizabeth is a Member of the Expert Committee of the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum Private Law Prize.

Elizabeth’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of torts, remedies, insurance, critical race theory and feminist analysis of law. She has published numerous peer reviewed articles, book chapters and commentaries. Elizabeth is also co-author (with Ken Cooper-Stephenson) of Personal Injury Damages in Canada, 3^rd ed. (Thomson Reuters, 2018), (with Jamie Cassels) Remedies: The Law of Damages, 3rd ed. (Irwin Law, 2014) and Berryman et al, Remedies: Cases and Materials, 8th ed. (Emond Montgomery, 2020). She revised the Canadian Encyclopedic Digest, Insurance (Carswell, 2016).

Key initiatives & responsibilities

Reporting to the Vice-President Academic and Provost, the Associate Vice-President Academic Programs (formerly the AVP Academic Planning) works to ensure the quality of current and future academic programs by:

• Increasing experiential learning opportunities so that students are transformed by their time at UVic, and are equipped for personal success and to contribute effectively as alumni and global citizens.
• Overseeing all aspects of major emerging academic programs, from fit with the university and faculty strategic plans, pedagogical approaches, recruitment and marketing plans, and resource requirements through to advisory and administrative involvement once such programs are launched.
• Leading Quality Assurance through regular review of academic programs and accreditation
• Developing strategic partnerships with other post-secondary institutions, external institutions, and governments related to planning and supporting academic program quality, sustainability and development.
• Overseeing UVic’s role in the Island Medical Program, a distributed program of the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine.

The AVP Academic Programs provides institutional leadership of experiential learning and oversees the Division of Learning and Teaching Support and Innovation and the Co-operative Education Program and Career Services.
