Responsibilities & organization

Reporting to the President and Vice-Chancellor, the Vice-President Academic and Provost is responsible for leading the academic mission of the university.

The academic portfolio is the largest portfolio on campus, comprising of 22,000 students, 900 faculty and thousands of professional staff. VPAC leaders and the heads of academic units report to and through the Provost, including UVic’s 12 Deans and the University Librarian.

In collaboration with senior academic leaders, the Provost sets the academic priorities of the university and upholds our education mandate.

As chair of the Integrated Planning Committee, the Provost leads the budget process for the university, working collaboratively with other executive portfolios and their senior leaders. With the Vice-President Finance and Operations, the Provost presents the annual Planning and Budget Framework to the President and Board of Governors. In this capacity, the Provost is responsible for operationalizing the university’s strategic plan and ensuring collaboration and integration across all portfolios.

Ensuring high-quality education

The Academic Planning and Programs unit ensures the quality of academic programming, including developing, redesigning, reviewing and discontinuing programs. The portfolio provides oversight of co-operative education and experiential learning, career services, and teaching and learning supports to instructors and students.

Supporting students

The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for student recruitment and success. It includes all undergraduate and graduate student awards; admissions and records; academic advising; campus housing and dining; health and wellness programs and services; athletics and recreation; student orientation and community building; and several other student services, supports and resources.

Supporting faculty and librarians

Faculty Relations and Academic Administration handles human resource matters related to faculty and librarians, including appointments, salary awards, professional development and related policies. They also lead the collective agreement negotiation and implementation, and work with the Faculty Association to resolve issues respectfully.
