Base jumper trapped on ledge at rock quarry rescued by firefighters

A base jumper parachuted and landed on a ledge about 150 feet from the top of a rock quarry on Whites Creek Pike.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Nashville Fire Department personnel were able to rescue a base jumper who was trapped almost 300 feet from the top of a rock quarry ledge.

The fire department had to use extensive rope rigging and technical rescue skill to reach the jumper. Crews had to be lowered almost 300 feet to the jumper.

The jumper was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with multiple injuries.

The fire department began rescue operations just after 10 p.m. after an area had been cleared.

Nashville Fire Department personnel are working to reach the person and lower the appropriate equipment to safely extricate them from the ledge.

The fire department was called just after 8 p.m. to the rock quarry on Whites Creek Pike after the base jumper parachuted and landed on the ledge.

Crews had to remove brush from the area to prepare the high angle rescue equipment to retrieve the jumper. Medics are standing by in case there are injuries.

“Crews are working carefully to execute this tedious process,” the fire department said on social media. “Verbal contact has been made with the patient.”

It is not known if the base jumper has been injured.
