NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A teen was arrested after third graders at Kittrell Elementary School found a loaded handgun on the playground in mid-April, according to Rutherford County Schools.

On April 18, Rutherford County Schools notified parents of the incident and followed up about an arrest in connection to the gun being found.

After the students told their teacher about finding the gun, a school resource officer was notified and secured the weapon, according to Rutherford County Schools spokesman James Evans.

RCS said the gun was loaded, however, there was not a bullet in the chamber.

Law enforcement investigated and was able to track down and arrest the 19-year-old owner of the gun.

The teen said he was on the playground the night before and must have dropped it there.

He’s been charged with felony possession of a gun on school grounds, Evans said.
