NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Last year, Shirley Medrano’s life was forever changed when she was admitted to a Nashville hospital after experiencing issues with her organs.

The doctor would later reveal to the 18-year-old that she was having complications with her liver.

“I was going into liver rejection and they gave my parents 12 to 24 hour span,” Medrano recalled tearfully.

With no other options, health officials informed her that she would need a liver transplant.

Just over a week after being in the hospital, a donor was found for the Sumner County Teen. While undergoing treatment, she found comfort in a toy dachshund from the gift shop.

“That dachshund has been with me when I was getting every shot, every IV. I wanted the real deal,” she said.

By her undergoing life-altering surgery, she became eligible for a Make-A-Wish, which was to own a real dachshund.

The organization granted her wish Tuesday and Tractor Supply gave Medrano $500 worth of pet supplies to go with it.

“This is who we are,” explained Marti Skold-Jordan of the Tractor Supply Foundation. “We believe in serving our community, serving our neighbors who are living life out here so if Make-A-Wish gives us a call saying they need something, we’re right there to do.”

After undergoing a successful surgery, Medrano say her life is now complete after having a real dachshund.

Now she is looking ahead to a future that many did not think was possible one year before.

“Definitely college, definitely have to make my doctors proud,” she said. “They were pushing me to do more than I thought I could myself at the moment because of them I’m here.”
