NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - What had been a quiet spring severe weather season rapidly changed into an active one.

All it takes is one severe weather outbreak to make it a bad severe weather season. That’s what we’ve seen this Spring and Mother Nature may have more in store for us.

The National Weather Service (NWS) keeps a record of tornadoes each year and has determined that our average amount of tornadoes in a year for Middle Tennessee is 10.

So far this year we’ve had 10 tornadoes in Middle Tennessee which means we’re right at our average. All 10 of those tornadoes happened just last week; mainly during the May 8 to 9 tornado outbreak.

13 tornadoes have touched down in Middle Tennessee so far this year.

Five of those 10 tornadoes came from Lincoln County alone. We could certainly see more tornadoes throughout the rest of this year.

Although tornadoes are most common during transition seasons, such as spring and fall, they can happen any time of the year under the right conditions.

It’s never too late to form a safety plan for you and your family so that you’re safe in the event a tornado occurs in your area.
