When should you begin planting things?
Our average last freeze is in April.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The recent warm weather may have you wanting to start planting in your garden, but it’s still a bit too early.
In Middle Tennessee, our average last freeze occurs in early April, and during this time, our plants are still at risk of damage. Even a late-season freeze can cause harm to plants.
During the early spring, the average overnight low temperatures range from the upper 30s to lower 40s. However, this is just an average, and we can still experience isolated frosty or freezing days.
As we head into mid to late spring, the warming trend takes over once again. From mid-April through late May, we can enjoy planting and preparing our gardens for the season.
If you want to start planting early, be sure to cover any plants if a cold night is forecasted, especially those that may be budding or showing foliage.
It’s best to use a sheet or blanket and not a plastic tarp to protect your plants this spring.
