VIP Checkbox

Was wondering what the VIP checkbox does. Why use it? What does it do, besides put an asterisks next to the timestamp?

It's sage.

Boards in the textboard software have their threads sorted by the time of their last post, so making a post would "bump" (上げ, age) the thread to the top of the board index. However, when posting in a thread, users may use a function known as sage (下げ, lit. lowering) to avoid bumping a thread in this way. Often, posters will use sage on purpose, to avoid unwanted attention.

VIP or Vipper is a shared nickname that was used by 2ch.net users.

I wonder how many more times someone will ask this question.

I'm sorry - I was just unfamiliar with "VIP" as a designation for this, and I looked at textboard.org and Wikipedia's page on 2ch.net, among other places, for an explanation, and found nothing. Maybe I will change Wikipedia's article and explain it for those curious in the future.

I wasn't really annoyed by your question. I was just curious, as it's already been asked once.

Hegel remarks somewhere that all great world-historic facts and personages appear, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.

Here's some trivia. While the posts stored in thread files have a vip field, the threads stored in list files do not. So Bitdiddle puts the vip mark right into the date field of threads in list files, in bbs.scm:update-post-count.

(set-cdr! old-date (string-append date " *"))

Thanks so much for this, I see your quote is from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2channel#Technology, but I was wondering about VIP / Vipper, why is that used for sage?

Bitdiddle has stated that the code was written under some time pressure, so you are not.
https://textboard.org/prog/39#t39p40

I realize how the code is messy or incomplete at places (a function named foo probably means I tried some temporary thing with the intent to change it later and totally forgot about it because it seemed to work). I also remember how quickly everything was hacked together on a cheap netbook while couchsurfing in Austria. Sweet memory. Mind you, I was in such a hurry that I wrote everything in vi vi vi the editor of the beast (I gave up on edwin for some reasons and believed I had no time to install and configure from scratch emacs, paredit, mit-scheme mode...)
