How can I run my own instance of this II

1 2020-11-06 06:29

The other thread maxed out...

So I'm not a programmer but I did this word for word on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and it went pretty well until I tried posting and hit the POST button but it displayed 404 error. Any idea what happened? (I have a local machine and tested it using localhost.)

So I'm not a programmer

I have some bad news for you, you're a beginner programmer and sysadmin now.

No refunds.
I would guess /opt/bbs/opt/schemebbs/data has permissions the newer docker doesn't like. File an issue here if you're fine with using github https://github.com/TeamWau/docker-schemebbs/issues high chance you won't get a reply.
Permissions means things beyond basic directory access controls, I didn't like playing with docker years ago so I don't know with it.

The admin made a second thread on 2020-06-18 as SchemeBBS [part 2].

Hi, I maintain the Docker image. Does /opt/bbs exist? Does the container's uid have write access to it? Do files get generated at all?

So I'm not a programmer

Cool, FrozenVoid is going to create his own board!
No, but seriously, if you intend to make it public, post the link here.

Implying i would want to maintain a forum for entitled lisp weenies and use the parens soup language to debug it.
Besides the problem isn't forum hosting, i could create a forum with anonymous access in 15 seconds, its the moderation that i don't like, its like janitorial jobs with zero reward and getting into moderation means less productive time.
That why i deleted all my forums. I value my nerves and peace of mind more than interacting with brainlets and normies.

I used to have a moderately popular forum before (not anonymous), the moderation part exhausted me and there were times when I actually didn't want to visit the site anymore, until I finally pulled the plug, I didn't even made a note to my users, I just got tired of it and wanted to get away and just closed it one day. Sometimes human interaction is just exhausting.

Does that mean that the reason you keep posting here is because you like us? :3c

It's scheme.

The problem here;
1.People on imageboards/textboards demand anonymity, so a forum/board has to have unlimited guest posting.
2.Anonymous posting invites spam and trolls that would ruin the forum easily, by mass posting random drivel.
3.Measures against that(captchas/long delays between posts) drive real posters away.
4.Maintaining forum without #3 is a pain the ass 24/7.
I like to sleep, have free time and not interrupt my life each few hours to "check how forum goes".
5.Enforcing usernames have few disadvantages:
it creates cliques and reputation-based posting, but its a lesser evil than unrestricted access, Unfortunately it drives away "Anonymous" type posters that only care about posting.
6.Enforcing pre-moderation of each post reduces interaction and drive people away, also doing it for more than 3-4 posts will be eventually required as trolls will post legit until fully approve their account for unlimited posting.
Its also extremely unscalable, when you have more >50-100 users, pre-moderation has to be delegated.

I tried some wiki sites, but they had zero interest from visitors and very low traffic, i'm slowly migrating(good) content to github, where i assume the site won't suddenly go away(MIcrosoft won't get bankrupt anytime soon), like wikidot hosting staff.
