From what I remember, it was all described properly in the text. You might not understand how awesome symbolic differentiation is, but you can implement it no problem.

Yeah, I am crap at math, barely skated by on C's, but I managed to do all the 'mathy' exercises in SICP. As >5 says, everything is explained, you're just translating it into an executable form.

It is only chapters 1 and 2 that contain lots of references to mathematics. Beginners start with chapter 1 and 2, and conclude that high school or undergraduate mathematical knowledge is prerequisite for reading the whole book. That is not true. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 do not have much mathematics in them. Beginners must avoid making erroneous extrapolations based on the first two chapters.
