How do you cope?

How do you cope with the fact that programming is irrelevant compared to product?
That, as things stand, you have absolutely everything at your disposal to make good software.
Yet one ponders the inane and the fruitless and the optimal paths that just mask a procrastination embedded.

Programming == product, are you just upset that marketing is necessary to make money in the software industry?

would say that programming != product the same way you don't need a blowtorch when there's a match.

I will kneel on marketing though

well friends or enemies and both but neither
I am here to state my farewells as I shrivel down desire
yes you may quip with biting glint "see you tomorrow"
yet sorry to say you'll be backed away with some faux sorrow
for no, no we weren't anything but nothing and yet here it ends
a fine tale as any, but do be aware - for both - another one begins!

In the commercial software industry, the determinants of market share, ordered from most important to least important, are:

* Type of market
* Marketing
* Design
* Function

Programming, which is mainly concerned with function, code quality and documentation, is the least important. So, if your goal is to make money from your software, try to spend less time on programming. This is why most highly skilled programmers don't become wealthy from the code they produce. They are focusing on the irrelevant, which is code.

Programming == product is in marketers' minds only.

I cope by working on "open source" at a big corporation. You have to please upstream otherwise they won't accept your patch.

the sine qua non is the least important

I doubt that.

How do you cope with the fact that programming is irrelevant compared to product?

I cope with it the same way as in scientific researches.

In terms of making money from software sales, programming is important, but it is the least important when compared to the other three. Only in a totally unsaturated market where everyone has bad marketing and design will your profits be determined almost completely by the quality of your programming.

So I was right, programming business does not involve programming.
