A Final Cry for /prog/ - it's do or die.

Are you desperate to be a Type 3 open source software contributor?
Do you want to pollute the world with additional useless poorly documented libraries?
Ready to have a memento of evidence that you came to this board, that you exist?

Look no further!
Join up with a bunch of neckbeards to create something!

Something you say? Yes, something!

...What is that something?
Well, you're just in time to help foster such a discussion!

I've assembled a checklist that you'll need to complete before posting in this thread:
- Prepared to make a throwaway git account
- Has a bunch of strong opinions about technology that mean absolutely nothing when it comes to actually making stuff

That's it.

The first (and most pertinent) topic of discussion:

What can an anonymous bunch of autists make that no one else can, and why?

I want to be types 1, 2, and 3. Simultaneously.

Prepared to make a throwaway git account

How do you even make a "git account"?

You could make me happy! :)

In the spirit of lazy-living and abbreviating, I meant signing up for a hosted git service like GitLab, or sr.ht, or whatever fits the fancy.
But if you want to don on the Type 3 hat, do understand the git IS a hosted git service for any Type 3 worth their snuff.
Distinguishing between client and server... no need.
>>3
That may be too tall of a request... only you can make yourself happy :-)

Gnawing away nails, in worry for our longevity
(which, although holds a single initiate, two or three do come in store, many more lurkers I do see and know)
- yes, with a staving of despair (brittle moments, adding up to here)
at last, I land upon ONE suggestion for our dilapidated state of affairs.

Programming board, programming board, what fearful hand molds thy enmities?
Programming languages, of course!

Thus my ballet written
Upon its corners creased
A little hope hidden
a /prog/ language to release!

A release? A release?!
Nonsense!

We (yes, we - yes, I will use 'we' and include you, dear reader.
No permission needed, for we (see?) both know you are in search of a play)

We need to go deeper.
Why make a language when you can ship another Framework?

Frameworks are the holy grail of the III living way.
I propose a Lisp Framework. Fuse contradictions!

Why make a language when you can ship another Framework?

I propose the Scheme Framework, a framework to help programmers write their own Scheme implementations. All common functionality of Scheme implementations will be encapsulated into a set of fully-documented APIs. Users of the framework would be relieved of their need to fully understand the complexities of the underlying mechanisms in Scheme implementations, allowing them to quickly achieve what is important: getting a sense of achievement from having implemented Scheme. This is a massive improvement upon the 40+ years of Scheme education. Students will no longer need to reinvent the wheel. They will no longer need to focus on the irrelevant details, giving them more time to learn other frameworks or to build other frameworks on top of the foundation provided by the Scheme Framework. We will enter a new age where pyramids can be built instantly by a single programmer who is casting the right spells. The future is bright.

9 2022-09-25 12:58

Scheme is a scheme implementation framework.

We should start a gorilla marketing campaign to convince everyone that every software ever written was an interpreter in some sense, and therefore programmers should spend most of their time studying interpreters, especially Scheme interpreters.

11 2022-09-26 17:43

>>10
The gorilla marketing campaign would indeed make programmers spend time to study interpreters. However, they would be building BASIC, COBOL, C, and Java interpreters, resulting in a flourishing of such interpreters and leading to a new golden age of BASIC and COBOL.

If we assembled the entirety of /prog/ to create a new Scheme + Framework, how many stars on GitHub can we get?

13 2022-09-27 18:14 *

A source is a source of course, of course.

14 2022-09-28 07:10 *

>>13
Of course of all sources in force of sources all course of this discussion I've a question more pertinent:

What flavor of Scheme will the /prog/riders rally around?

It's time to make a killer app for Scheme.
The Rails of Scheme is upon us.

The Rails of Scheme is upon us.

What flavor of Scheme will the /prog/riders rally around?

This will be easily derailed by infighting. The enemies of Scheme will meddle in the conflict and enjoy the sectarian strife. They will encourage the holy wars to go on for as long as possible, because they want to prevent the emergence of a strong and pure United Scheme.

GitHub

Proprietary Microsoft software.

stars on GitHub

Breadcrumbs that the benevolent Microsoft Corporation hands out to its slave programmers to con more programmers into become willing slaves in the GitHub code factory.

You are not indoctrinated to the type III ways...
>>15
I think through enough irrational discourse a flavor of Scheme may emerge.
How about https://github.com/yuriy-chumak/ol ?
We will beat the enemies of Scheme through puerile behaviour that even they would detest.

stars on GitHub

Before we reach a large number of stars, we should:

* Let the bug reports pile up before using a bot to automatically close the "stale" bug reports.
* Randomly close bug reports by claiming that we cannot reproduce the issue, or that it is a wontfix.
* Add lots of dependencies for the simplest of functionality by claiming that we don't want to reinvent the wheel.
* Promote the grand vision of the project and boast about how it will change the world, before abandoning the project within three months.

I thought we were going to do it in Scheme, not Rust.

20 2022-10-05 16:22

I think I have too much distaste for technology to make anything

21 2022-10-06 06:04 *

It tastes better with salt.

22 2022-10-06 17:53

How about something like a program to manage files on those dollar store mp3 players?
