Carleton Announces 17th President and Vice-Chancellor
A message from Greg Farrell, Chair, Carleton University Board of Governors
Tuesday, April 16, 2024
On behalf of the Board of Governors, I am excited to announce that after an extensive international search, Dr. Wisdom Tettey has been appointed Carleton University’s 17th President and Vice-Chancellor.
Dr. Tettey joins us from the University of Toronto, where he currently serves as a Vice-President and has been Principal of the Scarborough campus since 2018.
An inclusive and authentic leader who will champion our smart, caring community, Dr. Tettey will build on the university’s reputation for teaching, learning and research excellence.
He impressed the advisory committee with an ambitious vision for Carleton as a bold community of conscientious and adaptable global leaders who challenge the status quo and champion transformative change for the good of all.
Dr. Tettey brings proven experience in implementing strategic and operational plans at major Canadian universities. Prior to his current role, he was Dean of the Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences and the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, both at the Okanagan Campus of the University of British Columbia, and Interim Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Culture at the University of Calgary. He began his academic career at Queen’s University.
Ushering in an exciting new era for Carleton, Dr. Tettey will commence his five-year appointment as President and Vice-Chancellor effective January 1, 2025. He will also assume a tenured position as a professor in Carleton’s Department of Political Science.
Dr. Jerry Tomberlin, who has served as Interim President and Vice-Chancellor of Carleton since August 2023, will continue in this role until Dr. Tettey’s arrival in the new year. The Board of Governors extends its appreciation to Dr. Tomberlin for his tremendous service and commitment to Carleton during this transition period.
I would also like to sincerely thank the advisory committee for its diligence, dedication and collective Carleton-first approach to this endeavour over the past year. The committee included faculty, staff, students, alumni, senate and board members.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Tettey to Carleton!
Greg Farrell
