Dealing with spam and unwanted commercial solicitations

Over the past few years, the amount of junk e-mail being sent has increased dramatically, and Alcor users are receiving their share. We now have system-wide "spam-catchers" which you can enable if you like; detailed instructions are found in the "Main" file referred to in the procmail basic installation, which you must perform before you can enable the spam-catchers.

If you make a change, don't forget to test the set-up after each change to ensure that your mail still works properly.

If you are considering enabling the spam-catchers, you should probably at least glance through the appropriate recipe files:

spam/tag, the spam-catchers set-up and "standard" spam tagging file. You must include this file before the rest of the spam-catcher files.
spam/tag-radical, a more draconian tagging file. This one will tag mail from entire sites which repeatedly spam, possibly catching legitimate mail as well; it is entirely optional. However, experience over the past few months has been positive; we recommend this one. This file includes lists of bad sites compiled by other people, and the new filters for catching large binary Christmas greetings.
spam/tag-contents, a file which tags letters based on their subject lines and body contents. A letter is tagged if it contains a sentence fragment that has frequently been associated with spam in the past.
spam/reply, which will automatically send replies to any messages tagged by the tag (and, if enabled, tag-radical) file. Before you enable this optional set of recipes, be sure to read the texts of the messages that might be sent out on your behalf (they are pointed to in the file). We no longer recommend attempting to reply to spam.
spam/delete, which will automatically delete the tagged messages instead of delivering them to your mailbox. This way, you need never see them. If you'd rather receive them but file them in a separate folder, see the instructions in your "Main" file.

The spam-catchers recipes are maintained on a volunteer basis with the cooperation of Neil Schwartzman. Concordia folks can report new spam to him by sending a copy with all headers, including the Received headers, to <neil@alcor.concordia.ca>. (If you're not a Concordia person, please don't report spam to Neil.)

We periodically receive enquiries from people at other sites who'd like to make use of our spam-catching recipes, either individually or site-wide. The answer is yes, you may use them for any purpose you like; just remember that you do so at your own risk, and we disclaim any responsibility for the consequences of your using these recipes.
