After a relatively flat and lengthy first nine holes, golfers will face a back nine that meanders through rolling hills, experiencing dramatic elevation changes along the way. The back nine also features spectacular views of the nearby San Tan Mountains and the Southeast Valley. The golf course features player-friendly fairways that are open with generous landing areas but the large, undulating greens offer quite a challenge.

by Rob McKinnell on December 02nd, 2015 05:39Played yesterday. Was told "no coolers" but the starter searched my little bag that had two bananas in it and said it was fine. Went into proshop where the Pro immediately accosted me and very aggressively told me that I would have to take my "cooler" to my car or rent one for my bananas by giving him my drivers licence. He must have been looking out the window with binoculars, He was extremely rude!!!!
Then went to the range where our foursome hit some balls. Apparently we were on the "members" side and were chastised for that. Did not see a sign. We understand & support efforts to reduce slow play however received several msgs on the gps screen to keep up when in fact we were often waiting on the twosome in front of us.
We played theback nine first due to a frost delay and when we made the turn asked the starter directions to the first tee. He must have misunderstood us as he rudely yelled "we're not playing 1 today, park your cart over here!!!" When I tried to explain he repeated his order.
When we completed the round again we had to ask where to put the carts and were once again rudely told to "park it over there".
Overall this was a really negative experience for us and the confrontation with the Pro at the beginning showed how poor the customer service is at Johnson Ranch. With all the variety of courses in this area you would think that they would appreciate business rather than drive it away!
Lesson learned here - NEVER AGAIN!!!
by Sean on February 04th, 2015 21:11I agree with the other guy.
Slow play sucks and Johnson Ranch is doing all they can to solve it. Most golfers don't know what they are doing. Snow birds mostly come from Private clubs that don't have any idea what pace means!!!!!. They come down here and want to play as slow as they want. Support Johnson Ranch and you support fast play!!!!!
by rick on February 04th, 2015 21:06Funny all the review are about pace. That is why I could not be happier. That is why I play there every week.
Slow play is the reason why golf is failing. I am glad that Johnson Ranch is doing what they are doing about pace KEEP IT UP JR!!!!!! People don't know how to play ready golf.
by Randy M on January 27th, 2015 21:35Lived on this course since 2008, it was poorly run then and still is. Staff are arrogant and rude including the pro. Every time I play, we are treated horrible! From encouraged to speed up, when we haven't seen the group behind us for 9 holes.
I have played golf all my life and this course is by far the worst regarding treatment. There are too many golf courses out there to put up with terrible treatment. I know 2 Single digit HC golfers who moved to Merrill Ranch and golf Poston Butte, because of how JR. was operated.
Please check out the reviews of this course and others, Poston Butte, Ocotillo, Lone Tree, and those up in Gold Canyon!!!!
by paul on August 02nd, 2014 15:46You know, with all the bad reviews this course gets, you would think that someone would look into fixing the problem.I'd like to play this course more often as I live down on the poston butte golf club.I like Johnson but I agreed with all the negative reviews.Way too long to play.
by Marc Mulford on April 18th, 2014 09:07Nice course, especially the back nine. Challenging and scenic. The course is kept in good condition. That being said, this is one of the worst run courses in the valley. The staff is rude and unorganized. They cater to the resident members and will actually bump your tee times to accommodate them. We have played 6 hour rounds and have had resident groups move in front of our group on the #1 tee box. Go out and play Poston Butte and see how guests should be treated.
by mike shawar on October 28th, 2011 16:20I have played here a couple times course is always nice but the staff is horrible very rude and think they are running the TPC way overbooked sometimes waiting for 3 foursomes to T off they need to raise the price and speed up the play by having less golfers again nice course just poorly managed
by Dawn on April 11th, 2011 19:58My son and I have been playing here for a few years, and we love it. It's a nice course, teh restaurant (atmosphere, employees and food) are a wonderful way to end the day. Some times they have music, so it's nice to sit outside, relax after a wonderful game and listen to the music. My son is a pre-teen and he is treated just as respectfully as an adult while we are there. We've played a lot of course, but this is always our favorite.
by Russ Grant on February 20th, 2011 08:33Overpriced for amenities provided, unfriendly employees that act like they are golf royalty. Your time and money are better utilized elsewhere.
