The Padre Course at the Camelback Golf Club, one of two 18-hole courses at the club, is a traditional parkland-style course that offers stunning views of the Camelback Mountain. The gently rolling terrain of the course provides golfers with a formidable test.
Arthur Hills redesigned the club’s original course in 1999. The result is a classic desert design that has been modernized. Among the improvements are bunkers that pop up everywhere and wide fairways that often split. The par-3s are on the long side, including the daunting 220-yard 17th.
Unlike the other course at the Camelback Golf Club, the Padre Course has a parkland design that is situated on gently rolling terrain covered with lush vegetation. Although the pleasant scenery and beautiful vistas of the course are inviting, golfers should be prepared for a challenge. The landscape provides several natural hazards with towering trees scattered throughout and multiple lakes that come into play on several holes. The course is also heavily bunkered to truly test golfers. The finishing hole is a notably challenging hole that features water, Arizona Golf Magazine even named it the best water hole in the state.
The 36,000 square-foot pueblo-styled Clubhouse designed by Douglas Fredrikson offers golfers an expansive golf shop. The Grill at the Camelback Golf Club is a great place for lunch during your Arizona golf vacation and The Grill Lounge is a terrific 19th hole meeting place after your day of championship golf at either course at Camelback Resort.
by David on September 03rd, 2017 10:24The course is in OUTSTANDING condition and it can be easy or challenging depending what Tee box you play from. The bunkers have good sand fill and the staff are some of the most friendly in the valley. Pace of play is good and the rangers are responsive to your requests. The practice facility is the best in Scottsdale with a nice driving range plenty of pitching greens and putting greens. We absolutely love both Camelback courses and facilities. Did I mention the refreshment carts are frequent and the kids staffing them are great. Have Fun!
by Gary K on April 04th, 2016 07:42I love to golf at Camelback and have friends and relatives who are members but will never return after my last round there. I was in a foursome with my wife and 2 others on the 10th hole when a party of three men behind hit up on us and came close to hitting one of out party. No apology was given. I called to them to back off. After teeing off on the 16th hole as we were about to hit approach shots to the green, a ball came flying at us at head level and very narrowly missed hitting another of our party in the head by inches. This time I was miffed and after finishing the hole, confronted the person who had hit that shot when he drove up to the green. I asked why he had hit up on us for the second time. His response was
"You yelled at me the last time I did so you you can go f**k yourself".
This struck me as rude, disrespectful and unbecoming of anyone I have ever encountered while playing golf anywhere let alone Camelback. I was angry and responded as such which resulted in a bit of a shouting match. In a heated conversation this party repeatedly taunted me with obscene comments and repeated insults describing me as an "old man" seemingly trying to goad me into more serious confrontation. I am 63 and move a little slower than I used to. Because of a medical issue I have difficulty walking. There were three in his party and four in ours. Had he asked to play through we would have gladly allowed that but they never did. They instead stood impatiently at the tee with ball teed up as they waited to hit their drives. Upon finishing the 18th hole I informed the Marshal and the staff who were receiving us and promptly left not wanting another confrontation with this party who had behaved more like a thug than a golfer. The next day, upon calling to inquire as to the outcome I was informed by a staff member that this party had admitted to making a mistake and had made an apology saying "he was very sorry that we had difficulty on the course" and everything was just fine. He totally dismissed my complaint saying they had told him an entirely different story which he did not reveal. This is far from "just fine" to me.
My conclusion is that the Camelback Golf Course is so hard up for non member paying golfers that they don't care how people behave on the course. I here ask members and non members alike to take note and to learn how to duck as this menace will undoubtedly return feeling confident that staff will believe whatever glib story he chooses to tell them.
