Walking around the Wigwam Resort & Golf Club's wide-open, campus-style grounds, it is not too hard to step back into time. That's good for the Wigwam, a hotel that has long relied on nostalgia in a state without much ancient history. In the Northeast, a 76-year history would garner a yawn.

Sometimes coolness is all that matters in a hotel. The James Hotel in Scottsdale provides that coolness - as guests like Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson can attest. In the desert, it's all about the swimming pool. And every resort in the Phoenix-Scottsdale resort labyrinth has at least one. The Wyndham Buttes Resort in Tempe lives off theirs. Carved out of the rock walls on which the resort is built, it provides a striking scene to wile away the off-course hours.
